@meganub: I agree with you. The people creating the code for Ubuntu itself are most likely different from those writing the documentation. Perhaps it bodes poorly for finding useful information in the documentation, then.

And you are correct! Someone has fixed the instructions. I just checked and noticed that. I will make an updated post soon about how the instructions are better.

I appreciate the comments!

>> That bodes poorly for actually using Ubuntu, doesn’t it? I think it does. <<

My question would be how exactly? Those are instructions written by Open source contributors in their spare time. By there nature the instructions are not necessarily going to be gospel.

Not to mention that any instruction on a website wiki - regardless of source - should be followed with care.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with this post up until that last line, and I enjoy your blog. However the logic I feel is a bit unfair.

It would be like me saying that because the Apple website was down, OSX must be a poor operating system.

Also - I think someone has quickly fixed the instructions so I would try again.

For the record I'm not an open source evangelist, I use Ubuntu/XP and OSX all on a daily basis and have equally disliked them all at one stage or another (well - maybe I've disliked XP a lot more then the others).

Also - congrats on the PhD.

As someone who sits at the side of some of these debates, I have personal experience with the '5 pixels' debate. Sometimes I think the only thing that keeps us from doing usability testing on each of these debates is money.

Money = Root of all evil
Usability studies for every aspect of the interface = Money x 2

Others can draw their own conclusions.

Yes, it might be an issue with that specific bank. One of my credit card accounts (correctly) shows up as $-8.50
